Is Fear of Failure Keeping You Stuck?

Fear can keep us from moving forward toward our goals. Fear of judgement, fear of failure and fear of being found out. How can you move through it?

Have you ever felt like a you are a fraud? Or, like you are going to be found out? For example, have you ever heard a small voice (or maybe even a big voice) in your head saying, who do you think you are, you can’t do this, you don’t have enough experience, they are better than you are, they won’t like you, you don’t have anything smart to say, you are not enough

This happens to me almost every time I try something new

The first day I was starting my real estate career and was going to go to the office, I heard that small voice in my head telling me no one would want to work with me and I went back to bed…

The first open house

And first listing appointment

That first networking attempt

Leading my first mastermind group

The first Home buyer’s seminar

The first time I presented my training materials to the other agent’s in the office

My first new agent training weekend

The first day I was the “manager” of the office

My first date after my divorce

The day I started my own company

Recording my first podcast

Broadcasting the first webinar

Writing a book

The list goes on and on….

I feel this way every time I try something new, in other words, every time I grow.

I wonder what is it about growth that is so scary? Is it that we might fail? Is it that we feel someone is watching us and judging us?

Has this come up for you?

Have you ever gotten all excited about a new marketing idea that you want to implement. Have you you get everything organized, and then when it came the time to take action, time to make the calls to the expired listing or reach out to a prospect that you know could use your services, does that small voice speak up and stop you in your tracks?

I’m not a psychologist, and don’t know all the answers however I will tell you what helps me push through the fear when this happens to me.

Taking action and moving forward, taking small baby steps toward my goal.

I believe this is the secret.

First Decide on a small action step and then second take it.

Consider this; Goals that are really big can be very exciting, but often times I have found the big goals to be the most paralyzing. The easiest goals for me are the small ones. Those goals that are only 15 minutes ahead of where we are right now. They are manageable baby steps that I can believe are possible to accomplish. I can look at a small step and believe that I can do it.

This process works for my clients too. We all struggle with self doubt at some time in our lives.

That little nagging voice that we hear in our heads telling us we can’t do it, we don’t belong here. I think it might be our sub-conscious mind trying to keep us safe. I’m sure there is a bunch of reasons this comes up for each of us and we all have our different demons. It’s not my objective to analyze that today. My goal is to help you move through it.

I hope you have a person to confide in that is your biggest cheerleader.

First of all I hope you have someone who believes in you and wants the best for you. However, I have found these same people can feed into our self doubt because they want to keep us safe.

Therefore, it’s important for us to feed our minds good brain food on a daily basis. Read good books, fiction and non-fiction, watch webinars, listen to podcasts, join a networking group or mastermind of like minded people and get a coach.

There is one other trick I have that helps me get unstuck.

I tell myself, Do it now!

I had this saying on a sticker on my computer for years. Later on it was on a post-it-note when I lost the sticker. Now it is my mantra.

If I start to get the feeling in my stomach that I can’t do it, that I’m not enough, I think, ‘What is the one small step that I can do and can take right now to move me forward” and then I say out loud “Okay, do it now.”

What is that one thing that you keep thinking about, the one thing you know could make a difference for you?

Think about one small step you could take to move that one thing forward. What is one small baby step you could accomplish on that path today? Right now?

Do it now!

I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. ~Nelson Mandela
